A key advocacy priority by Vision 2020 Australia has been realised with the Federal Government’s announcement of a $12 million investment to expand access to essential assistive technology (AT) across the Indo-Pacific. This commitment is part of the new International Disability Equity and Rights Strategy launched at Parliament House on 28 November 2024 ahead of International Day of People with Disability.
The investment aligns with Vision 2020 Australia’s call for additional funding to improve access to affordable, high-quality assistive equipment and wrap-around services in partnership with Pacific-led organisations.
Vision 2020 Australia CEO Carly Iles highlighted the critical role of assistive technology in supporting independence for people with vision loss, from inexpensive devices like glasses and white canes to other enabling technologies that improve daily functioning.
Ms Iles also thanked the government and Minister for International Development and the Pacific, the Hon Pat Conroy MP, for acting on the recommendation. The initiative reflects collaboration with members and partners with expertise in the region.
